Rice shines with its Bright Stars

The American Physical Society (APS) has awarded Rice University researchers Naomi Halas and Peter Nordlander the 2014 Frank Isakson Prize for Optical Effects in Solids in recognition of their groundbreaking research in nano-photonics. In announcing the prize, APS cited Halas’, Nordlander’s and Heinz’s “seminal contributions to our understanding of the photophysics of low dimensional material systems, revealing the rich optical properties of plasmons, excitons and electrons in confined geometries.” Read More Here !

Naomi Halas is the Stanley C. Moore professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering and professor in Chemistry at Rice University. Her current work focuses on metal nanoparticles and metal-dielectric nanoshells which is currently a very attractive field for plasmon based devices.

Peter Nordlander is a Professor of Physics department. He is currently involved and well known for his investigation of the electronic structure of nanoparticles and his approach towards microscopic description of plasmonics including quantum effects and coherence phenomena.
